This is not a stupid question. Exfoliating is a mechanical way of removing dead skin cells and debris from top layer of skin. When you exfoliate with a granular scrub, don't rub or scrub, massage in circular motions. I use a little of baking soda mixed in with my cleanser. This is a very cheap way of removing debris and dead skin cells. You only need to exfoliate 2-3 times a week.
Another method of exfoliating is using a glycolic acid (AHA) lotion, serum, or cream or salicylic acid, or lactic acid. I use MD forte facial lotion II. I would recommend starting out with 12-15% and you can gradually increase the strength. Neostrata makes a good AHA lotion, but I prefer MD Forte, but it is expensive $35.00-40.00 for 2 oz.
The last method of exfolating is chemical, which would be a facial peel or enzyme peel. There are a lot of good enzyme masks to choose from. Also, lots of glycolic peels, but don't compare to what you get in the doctors office. If you are confused, start out with the baking soda and invest in a good glycolic lotion. Your skin will look luminous, clear, even-toned, and years younger. Good Luck!!OK this is probably a stupid question but what is exfoliating and how do you do it?

Its like buffing off all the dead skin and deep dirt.. there are millions of products out there and you can get them anywhere that sells costmetics.
Make sure to moisturise afterwards!
Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells from the face and body. You can use a scrub bought at the store of look up a homemade one online. You might also/or use a washcloth or loofa sponge. Gently massage moist skin with cleanser sponge. Rinse and pat skin dry. Moisturize. Repeat once a week.
I believe it is cleaning off your face, (from dirt, sweat, dead skin). You can buy facial washes to help.
